Chart View
Generate and modify a data visualization chart from a super search.
Customized comparison and trend charts can be generated directly from a super search, without needing to export data to Excel or other data visualization tools. These charts are accessible from the Chart View tab on an organization, request, payment, or requirements super search. Charts for saved super searches can also be added as widgets on the home page.
Clicking Edit criteria allows you to edit the criteria for the super search. Super Search contains details.
Modify a Chart
A default chart first displays, which can then be modified.
Click the pencil icon next to the chart title to edit it.
Chart Category and Type
The chart category determines the available chart types. Comparison charts show comparisons between categories of data, while trend charts show trends over time.
Trend charts are not available in the chart view for an organization super search.
The Comparison category includes the following chart types:
- Bar - Shows comparisons between categories of data in a horizontal format.
- Column - Shows comparisons between categories of data in a vertical format.
- Pie - Shows the relationship of parts to a whole.
- Donut - Shows the relationship of parts to a whole.
The Trend category includes the following chart types:
- Line - Shows trends over time, with distinct points connected by a line.
- Column - Shows comparisons between categories of data in a vertical format, grouped by a date field.
Aggregate, Group, Frequency, and Sort
Several additional options are available to modify a chart.
- Aggregate By - Select the value field by which the data in the chart will be aggregated. For example, in a pie chart, this field determines the size of the pie slices. In a bar chart, this determines the lengths of the bars.
- Group By - Select the field to determine the categories for the chart. In a trend chart, this must be a date field. For example, in a line chart, this determines which type of date will be used to group the data (e.g. grant start date). In a pie chart, this determines which categories are displayed as pie slices (e.g. request statuses).
- If a code type is selected, select the code level to use for grouping the data. See the Primary and Secondary Codes in Charts section for more details.
- If a code type is selected, select the code level to use for grouping the data. See the Primary and Secondary Codes in Charts section for more details.
- Sort By - In a comparison chart, select the field by which the chart will be sorted and whether sorting should be ascending or descending.
- Frequency - In a trend chart, select whether the groupings by date should be yearly, quarterly, monthly or daily.
Chart Colors
Customize the colors used in a chart.
- Click the plus icon to add an additional color to the chart.
- Click a color to edit it, delete it, or change the order in which it is used in the chart.
Default chart colors can be customized in Admin Tools & Settings. Managing Site Colors in GivingData contains details.
Save a Chart
One chart can be saved for each super search. Modifications made to a chart are saved by clicking Save search or Save a copy. When running the saved search again, the saved chart is displayed in the Chart View tab.
Export a Chart
A chart can be viewed in a full screen format or exported. Click the three dots icon, and then click the desired view or export option.
Primary and Secondary Codes in Charts
If a code type is selected in the Group By dropdown for a chart, there are details to consider if the code type allows more than one code to be assigned per record.
If the code type does not track percentages, the chart reflects a record’s full value by its primary code assignment only. Secondary code assignments are not reflected in the chart.
- For example, consider a request with Education assigned as the primary code and Arts as the secondary code. A chart grouped by the program area code type will reflect the full value of the request (e.g. Recommended Amount) within the Education program area. No value for the request will be reflected within the Arts program area.
If the code type does track percentages, the values in the chart do reflect the percentage assignments across codes.
- For example, consider a request with 75% assigned to the Education code and 25% to Arts. A chart grouped by the program area code type will reflect 75% of the request’s value (e.g. Recommended Amount) within the Education program area and 25% within the Arts program area.
